BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Hosting the Reinhardt University Eagles for two games Sunday afternoon at Roxy Hines Field, the Montreat softball team fell in both competitions, losing a 12-1 decision in five innings in game one and 15-4 in five frames in game two. The results moved the Cavaliers to 4-23 (2-8 AAC) on the season.
After three of the first four batters reached base to start the twinbill,
Candace Cooper pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to keep RU off the board.
Reinhardt (17-10, 7-3 AAC) then put up crooked numbers in multiple innings to build a sizable advantage. The Eagles plated six in the second and four in the third to lead 10-0 through three.
Ashley Starnes pulled a run back in the bottom of the fourth thanks to her second home run of the year. Starnes lined a ball over the left field fence to give the Cavs their initial run on the team's second bomb of the season.
RU responded with a pair of runs in the fifth and shut down the Cavalier offense in the bottom of the frame to take the five-inning shortened competition by a score of 12-1.
Starnes (2-2) ended game one as the only Montreat batter with multiple hits, notching two of the team's four base knocks.
Following a pair of runs by the Eagles in the opening inning, the Cavaliers got two runners on in the bottom of the first frame of game two.
Cameryn Bass and
Coleena Selleck got on base to start the inning, but the team recorded three unproductive outs with runners on second and third to end the scoring threat.
After Reinhardt added 12 more runs in the second to go up 14-0, Cooper scored Abbie Christopher on a sacrifice fly and Selleck singled up the middle to plate
Savannah Pruitt, trimming the home team's deficit by two.
Pruitt then doubled to leadoff the fourth before coming around on a Bass RBI single to left center. Though the Eagles earned the run back in the fifth, Montreat answered with an RBI groundout off the bat of Christopher, but it wasn't enough as the Cavaliers fell by 11 in five.
Bass and Selleck each ended the latter contest 2-for-3, while seven different Cavs registered base hits in the game.
Softball continues its AAC slate with a doubleheader versus Truett McConnell Monday afternoon. First pitch of game one at Roxy Hines Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
