JACKSONVILLE, Fla.— The Montreat softball team closed out its spring break trip to Florida on Tuesday with another doubleheader at Edward Waters University, coming up short in both contests against the Tigers, 8-0 and 1-0. Montreat's season record fell to 3-18 overall after the pair of non-conference contests in Jacksonville, Fla.
Similarly to game one of Monday's doubleheader at EWU,
AJ Martin Aiken and
Cameryn Bass got things started for the Cavaliers with back-to-back singles in the first. Despite the two early baserunners, Montreat was unable to capitalize and came up empty in the initial frame.
Edward Waters (18-5) took advantage of a one-out double in the bottom half of the first by singling a runner home just two batters later to seize a 1-0 lead. The hosts then doubled their lead thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the second inning.
After a scoreless third frame, the Tigers once again doubled their lead, leaping ahead of the Cavaliers by a score of 4-0 via a two-out two-RBI triple. Edward Waters then tacked on three more runs in the fifth on an RBI single to right field and a two-run double to left.
The Cavaliers, who tallied just one additional hit in game one after their first two batters singled, couldn't find the missing base knock to cut into their seven-run deficit in the top of the sixth. Meanwhile, the hosts put the game to rest with a two-out RBI single, claiming a six-inning 8-0 run-rule victory in the process.
Bass (2-3) and Martin Aiken (1-3) combined for Montreat's three total hits in game one.
Montreat's offense had similar luck in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Cavaliers produced just one hit in the ballgame, which came in the form of a leadoff single in the second off the bat of
Allison Chapman (1-3).
While the Cavalier bats were cooled off,
Jenae Fedewa was on fire inside the pitcher's circle for Montreat. Fedewa delivered a complete-game performance in game two by firing off six innings of one-run softball. The Winter Park, Fla. native allowed just six hits over those six frames while striking out three Tigers.
Fedewa's lone blemish on the afternoon came on three consecutive two-out hits in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back singles followed by a double put the hosts ahead of the Cavaliers, 1-0. That run proved to be the only tally for either side in game two as Edward Waters swept the doubleheader over the Cavs.
With the Florida trip in the rearview mirror, the Montreat softball team returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Saturday with two games at St. Andrews University. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m. in Laurinburg, N.C.
