Softball Drops Pair in South Carolina

HARDEEVILLE, S.C.— The Montreat softball team continued its season-opening weekend with a pair of road contests on Saturday afternoon against the University of South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks. The Cavaliers went on to drop both contests on the day, falling to 0-3 on the season.

After a leadoff walk by AJ Martin Aiken to start the game one, the Cavaliers were unable to take advantage and left the runner stranded at second base. University of South Carolina Beaufort (2-1) found a way to push five runs across in the bottom half of the inning thanks to two two-run triples and an RBI single.

USCB (3-1) tacked on a couple more runs in the second inning, utilizing an RBI double to right center and a sacrifice fly to pad their lead out to 7-0.

Montreat scored its lone run of game one in the top half of the fourth inning. Jayda Treaster led off the inning with a single up the middle and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch; however, the hosts answered in the bottom half of the inning with their lone home run of the afternoon, a three-run shot to left field. The Cavaliers were unable to answer in the top half of the fifth inning and, as a result, dropped the first matchup between the two sides by a 10-1 score line.

Treaster led the Cavs offensively in the opening contest, registering a hit in her lone official at-bat. Treaster earned a walk in her other plate appearances, one of three Cavalier walks in the game. Coleena Selleck also went 1-for-1 in game one, recording a base hit in her single plate appearance.

Like game one, game two started with USCB scoring five runs in the first inning. Using four RBI hits—two singles, a double and a triple—the Sand Sharks jumped ahead of the Cavaliers, 5-0. The hosts then padded their lead with an RBI single in the third inning.

A two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning closed out the scoring in game two, as the Cavaliers were unable to manufacture a run in the top half of the fifth inning. The Sand Sharks, behind a one-hit shutout, claimed the 8-0 win.

Isabella Colbert went 1-for-2 in game two, rifling a double to right center in the second inning. Selleck also reached base, utilizing a fifth-inning walk to become the Cavs' second baserunner of the contest.

The Montreat softball team looks to continue its season-opening road trip with a doubleheader at Carolina University on Feb. 15. First pitch is currently set for 2:00 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
