BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat men's soccer team honored its seniors and concluded its 2022 campaign at Pulliam Stadium Saturday night, taking on the Carolina University Bruins in a non-conference showdown. When the final whistle blew, neither team had scored, resulting in a 0-0 draw between the two sides.
Montreat applied early pressure as the Cavaliers earned their first corner kick and shot on goal, a header by
Brian Eke, within the first minute of action. The Cavs and the Bruins traded opportunities in the ensuing minutes with both squads creating dangerous chances in the opposing penalty area; however, the tries in the first portion of the frame were not finished by either squad.
Carolina (11-2-1), the 10
th-ranked team in the National Christian College Athletic Association, registered most of the quality attempts, adding seven consecutive shots from the 10
th minute to the 21
st minute, but three tries were blocked by the Cavalier defense and another two were saved by
Marius Braedstrup-Holm.
Neither squad found the back of the net in the first period as the Bruins doubled up the home team in shots (10-5). CU also led in shots on goal (3-2), while each team collected two corner kicks. Braedstrup-Holm ended the frame with three saves.
In the second half, the teams continued to battle and look for a breakthrough; however, defense prevailed. From back lines to goalkeepers, several key tackles and saves were made by both sides.
Braedstrup-Holm made four vital stops, including one in the 87
th minute, to keep the game scoreless. Meanwhile, offensively,
Ricardo Madan and
Hugo Rodriguez each had chances to give the Cavaliers an advantage late in the contest. Madan pushed his attempt just over the bar in the 84
th minute, while Rodriguez sent his try on goal and forced a save in the ensuing minute of play.
Carolina produced more offensively in the latter half as well, notching nine shots to the Cavs' four, but Braedstrup-Holm secured his second clean sheet of the season by making a total of seven saves. Overall, the visitors outshot Montreat 19-9 (7-3 on frame) and tallied a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Rodriguez led the Cavaliers with three shot attempts.
Since the Cavs failed to finish in the top eight of the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings, Montreat ended its season with a 6-10-2 record.
