CLEVELAND, Ga.— The Montreat women's soccer team took to the road for a match against the nationally-ranked Truett McConnell University Bears on Saturday afternoon. Though the Cavaliers surrendered only one first-half tally, Montreat dropped the match by a score of 5-0 and fell to 1-1 (0-1 AAC) on the season.
Likely facing their toughest Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) opponent in the opening conference contest, the Cavs gave up a mere one goal to TMU in the first half, with that goal coming in the ninth minute. Following the blemish, Montreat held the Bears' attack at bay as
Payton Landy recorded seven saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the game tight heading into the second period.
Landy recorded an impressive 14 saves over the full competition, stunting the Truett McConnell offense, who outshot the visitors 34-3 on the afternoon, for the majority of the matchup.
As TMU's pressure broke through the Cavalier defense, the Bears struck four times in the second 45 minutes to secure the win in their favor.
Montreat placed two of its three shots on frame, while also collecting three corners in the match.
Women's soccer is back in action on Wednesday when the Cavaliers host St. Andrews looking to rebound. Kickoff at Pulliam Stadium is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
