Volleyball Wins Pair of Contests, Matches Previous Season Win Total

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla.— The Montreat volleyball team won a pair of matches at Florida College on Saturday, matching last year's season win total of three.

Montreat swept the Brewton-Parker College Barons in their opening match of the day before digging itself out of a two-set hole to defeat the Florida College Falcons in five sets.

In the day's first match, Brewton-Parker was no stranger to starting sets well. The Barons jumped out to an early 8-5 lead in the opening set, but Montreat used a quick spurt to knot things up at eight.

The first set would prove to the be the tightest of the three, with neither side leading by more than two points until Brewton-Parker grabbed a 19-16 advantage. But all afternoon, the Cavaliers found an answer. Another quick run tied the set at 20, while a service error and emphatic block saw the Cavs snag the opening set, 27-25.

After Brewton-Parker took an early 4-1 lead in the second set, Montreat roared back to take five of the next six points. Then, when trailing 10-8, the Cavs' attack found its groove. A four-point run handed Montreat a set lead it would not relinquish. The Cavs staked their claim on the set with an extended stretch that ended at 25-15.

The Barons came out firing on all cylinders in the third set by taking the first six points, but the Cavaliers were not flummoxed, winning 13 of the next 17 points through strong play on the service line and at the net. A Brewton-Parker run would tie the set at 14, but that wouldn't stop the Cavs. Seven straight points helped Montreat find some breathing room, and the Cavs managed to complete their second sweep of the season, 25-18.

In the second match of the day, Florida College picked up where Brewton-Parker left off by getting off to a quick start in the opening set. Montreat won the first two points, but the Falcons vicious attack rattled off the next six points to establish a lead they would hold the rest of the way. The Falcons first-set lead grew to as large as 12 points (22-10). Montreat closed the set with a strong run of play, but Florida College's advantage was too much to overcome. Ultimately, the Falcons won the first set, 25-21.

Montreat and Florida College played a back-and-forth second set, one in which neither side led by more than two points. The difference came in the final four points, which all went the Falcons way. Montreat led 23-21, but Florida College used a few strong attacks and one big block to help secure the second set, 25-23.

With their backs against the wall, the Cavs started the third set strongly, grabbing a 9-4 lead and forcing a Falcons timeout. The timeout could not have come at a better time, as Florida College scored 10 of the following 15 points to tie the set 14-14; however, Montreat responded with a 6-point run of its own, and the Cavs claimed the third set, 25-20.

The Cavalier attack was powerful and dangerous in the fourth set. Montreat seized an early advantage in the frame and used it to roll past Florida College, 25-18, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set.

In the decisive fifth set, Montreat had everything clicking early, winning seven of the initial 10 points. From there, the Cavaliers just needed to trade punches with the Falcons. Montreat did just that, completing the comeback by winning the fifth set, 15-12.

Head Coach Haley Paonessa mentioned, "We played together as a team today. Everyone worked together as one to get things done. I'm one proud coach after this weekend."

With today's wins, the Montreat Volleyball team improves to 3-1 on the season. Their next action will come next weekend, Sept. 3-4, in Rio Grande, Ohio.
