Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 25 Bryan on Road

DAYTON, TENN.— The Montreat women's basketball team travelled to Tennessee Saturday afternoon to take on the No. 25 Bryan College Lions. Though the Cavaliers fought in the matchup, Bryan claimed a 100-46 victory to drop Montreat to 7-7 (4-6 AAC) on the season.

After an early make by Jessyka Leak to get the Cavs on the board first, the Lions stormed back with the ensuing 13 points to build a double-digit advantage. Triniti Lockhart notched two buckets and Leak added another to cut the deficit down to seven; however, Bryan closed the initial quarter with another 13-0 stretch to lead 28-8.

Caleigh Raby connected on the first 3-point make of the afternoon for the Cavaliers, who had been 0-10 from deep, only a minute into the second. Raby went on to score Montreat's opening eight points of the frame, but the Lions kept pace with the senior's shooting. Alexis Marshall, Ja'Liah Wilson and Raby, who led the Cavs with 11 first-half points, all drained shots over the remainder of the quarter. Raby finished the contest with a team-best 15 points on 5-of-11 (4-6 3-pt FG) shooting.

At the half, prominent shooting from the home team resulted in a 57-24 advantage. Bryan shot 59.5 percent (22-37 FG), including eight of 14 (57.1 percent) from three, while Montreat made 27.1 percent (10-37 FG) and four of 18 (22.2 percent) from downtown.

Destiny Lewis and Aebri Graham each scored early in the third quarter, and Lockhart and Raby added points late, but Bryan poured in 25 points for the third straight frame to expand its lead. Alaina McPherson became the eighth Cavalier to get on the scoresheet at the beginning of the final period before Leak capped a quick 5-0 run for Montreat. In the end, the Lions improved to 11-0 (8-0 AAC), extending their AAC win streak to 72 games.

Overall, 10 different players scored for the Cavs, who saw Daisy Rice contribute an and-one and Vaniyah Petty sink a free throw in the fourth. The Cavaliers shot 24.2 percent (16-66 FG) for the game and a slightly better 25 percent (7-28) from beyond the arc. Bryan forced 19 Montreat turnovers through three quarters and converted 56.5 percent (39-69 FG) of their shots, including 12 3-point makes (12-25; 48 percent), to win big.

Women's basketball will attempt to get back on track when the team travels to Winston-Salem for a matchup with Carolina University on Monday. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
