Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.— Playing against one of the top teams in the country in the No. 13-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies, the Montreat men's soccer team dropped its road contest by a score of 4-0 Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers fell to 5-6 on the season following the defeat.
The Grizzlies (7-2-1) got on the board early in the competition, breaking the ice in only the sixth minute. Pressing the Cavaliers defense, GGC tallied another goal at the 10-minute mark to double its advantage.
Midway through the half, as the teams settled into the period, Montreat attempted to counterattack against the Grizzlies' daunting possession and created a high-quality scoring chance off the head of
Hugo Rodriguez that sailed over the GGC frame.
Despite the opportunity, the Cavaliers surrendered two additional tallies in the first half, a period in which the visitors were outshot 12-1.
The Cavs generated momentum to earn their first corner kick in the 50
th minute, which resulted in another high shot from Rodriguez, as Montreat began to possess the ball deep in the Grizzlies half. Montreat forced two saves from GGC's goalkeeper in the following moments and outshot the home team 5-3 in the second half; however, Georgia Gwinnett completed its clean-sheet victory by holding the Cavaliers off the scoreboard.
Ricardo Araujo and Rodriguez each recorded two shot attempts, while Araujo and
Carlos Hernandez registered the Cavs' two shots on frame.
"Today was disappointing. We did not play with energy or passion in the first half and we were punished for it by a top team," said head coach
Michael Bruce. "There was a great improvement in the second half and I hope we can take that energy and fight back into conference play on Wednesday."
Men's soccer continues its road trip at Bluefield University on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
