BARBOURVILLE, Ky.— In a road match versus the Union College Bulldogs Wednesday evening, the Montreat women's soccer team claimed victory by a score of 2-0. With the win, the Cavaliers moved to 10-2 (9-2 AAC) on the year.
Montreat controlled the possession and momentum from the outset of the competition, recording six shots, five on frame, in the opening minutes. The fifth of the attempts produced the initial goal of the game as
Kaitlyn Adams beat Union defenders down the right side. She rocketed a shot on target that was deflected onto the foot of
Zoe Frenier by the Bulldog keeper. Frenier placed home the rebound on her first touch to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 advantage in the 11
th minute.
As the half progressed, Montreat continued to send a barrage of shots toward the Union goal. The Cavaliers outshot the Bulldogs 13-4 in the first 45 minutes, including nine shots on goal compared to the home team's mere two. Despite much better opportunities, the Cavs failed to add to their lead, and Union led the corner kick count 4-0 with a half to play.
Just after the intermission, the Cavaliers doubled their lead over the Bulldogs thanks an even higher intensity. Following a Union foul only two minutes into the second frame,
Teigan Eicher sent a long ball to the Bulldogs defense. The home team's centerback had trouble with the clearance, resulting in a through ball to Adams, who found
Hayden Bunn waiting near the top of the six-yard box. Bunn powered a shot past Union's keeper and into the net for her fourth tally of the season and Montreat's second of the contest.
In the end, the pair of strikes was all the offense the Cavaliers needed to claim their 10
th victory of the year.
Payton Landy notched her third clean sheet, recording stops on all four shots on target she faced.
"I was proud of how our team came out in the second half," began head coach
Kristin Eggert, whose team decisively outshot Union 26-8 on the day. "We brought a higher work rate and showed resiliency," finished Eggert.
