WEST POINT, Ga.— The Montreat men's soccer team traveled to the Point University Skyhawks Saturday afternoon, defeating the home squad by a score of 2-0. The Cavs improved to 7-6 (6-4 AAC) following the victory.
Montreat used early pressure to create scoring chances. Ramping up offensively, the Cavaliers produced a series of corner kicks 11 minutes into the competition; however, the opportunities went begging outside of a
Guido Glorioso strike.
In the 17
th minute,
Ricardo Araujo dribbled down the right side of the field beautifully. Beating multiple defenders, Araujo made his way into the box and squared a pass for
Carlos Hernandez, who slotted the ball past the Point keeper to open the scoring and give Montreat a 1-0 lead.
The Skyhawks (5-4-1, 4-4 AAC) had a couple of chances midway through the first period, but none that truly tested
Jesus Ramos in goal despite three shots on frame. Ramos ended the afternoon with four stops.
Toward the end of the initial half, the Cavaliers controlled the majority of possession, which resulted in a late corner kick and shot on goal from
Rodrigo Jimenez. Montreat outshot Point 8-5 in the first 45 minutes, creating four corners to the home team's two.
In the second half of play, both teams traded chances and shots with regularity. Neither team could take advantage of opportunities until the game opened up in the waning minutes. Late in the half, it seemed as if the Skyhawks tied the match; however, the secondary pass went out of play just prior to the ball being sent into the goal.
With only 15 minutes remaining in the competition, the Cavaliers gathered a bouncing ball in the Point penalty area. Araujo and
Rodrigo Jimenez connected to provide insurance for the visitors as the former avoided the keeper and the latter coolly blasted a shot into the net to double the Montreat lead and secure the win.
The two-goal triumph marked the second straight clean sheet for the team and the third shutout in the last four games.
"This was a huge win for us as a team," started head coach
Michael Bruce. "We worked hard from start to finish and put in a great performance. I am extremely proud of the whole team," finished Bruce.
Men's soccer travels to Union (Ky.) on Wednesday for its next endeavor. Kickoff in Barbourville, Ky. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
