MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat volleyball team made light work of the Columbia College Koalas inside McAlister Gymnasium Friday evening, dominating the visiting squad in the minimum three sets. With the triumph, the Cavaliers improved to 6-7 (2-5 AAC).
In the opening frame, the Cavaliers controlled momentum from the start. After winning the first three points of the match, the Cavs extended their lead to seven within the initial 13 points. Behind four kills from
Kamryn Wolf, who now leads the team with 119 on the year, Montreat took a 1-0 advantage with a double-digit victory, 25-15. The Cavs hit an outstanding 0.343 in the set thanks to 14 kills and only two miscues.
Columbia attack errors assisted the Cavaliers the remainder of the way, as the Koalas recorded negative hitting percentages in both the second and the third sets. The visitors committed nine mistakes on the attack in the second frame alone, while Montreat had eight different players record kills in the frame.
Shanell Villar and
Alessandra Sendler both notched their first kills with the Cavs, and
Taylor Coe registered three kills en route to a commanding 25-12 triumph. Coe ended the evening with six kills on 14 swings for a 0.429 hitting percentage.
As the Cavaliers tried to close out the match, the home team forced Columbia (1-11, 0-9 AAC) to commit additional errors offensively. Though the Koalas kept themselves within striking distance, Montreat earned a set and match victory with a 25-19 win.
Haley Horton and Wolf each recorded six kills to match Coe's team high.
"I loved seeing our team's confidence back up after tonight," said head coach
Haley Paonessa. "They did their job and allowed Columbia to make the errors in the match. We had the opportunity to play everyone tonight, while keeping our team's composure," finished Paonessa.
Shalice Lynch and
Tamiya Bruce both added kills, while 12 separate Cavaliers tallied kills on the night.
Katie James led the team with a match-high 15 helpers, and
Cambria Bowen captained the back line for Montreat in the digs category with 10.
