Garrett Jones completed his seventh season as the head coach for the Montreat College men's basketball program in 2021-22. In his seven seasons as head coach, Jones and the Cavaliers have rattled off 128 wins.

On the national landscape, the Cavaliers qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in consecutive years during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. During those same seasons, Montreat finished as runner-up in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular season and tournament. Then, during the 2021-22 season, the Cavs appeared in the NAIA Men's Basketball Opening Round after finishing as the AAC regular season and tournament runner-up.

Jones has seen several of his players receive AAC awards, especially over the past four seasons. During the 2018-19 season, Austin Butler and Jeron Hemphill earned AAC First Team honors, while Alonzo Mobley picked up an AAC Second Team nod. During the 2019-20 season, Austin Butler picked up the AAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year Award. Butler also earned NAIA All-American Third Team honors that same season. Jaja Davis and Terrell Sheffey were name to the AAC Second Team, while Jamiel Wright earned a spot on the AAC All-Freshman Team. Sheffey, along with Daulton Beard and Jalen Henriquez, also found their way onto the AAC All-Academic list. During the 2020-21 season, Noah Dunn earned three honors: the AAC Freshman of the Year, AAC All-Freshman Team and AAC First Team. Jaja Davis also tallied an AAC First Team nod, plus an AAC All-Defensive Team award. Elijah Idlett rounded out the trio of Cavs to earn AAC honors when he was named to the AAC Second Team. Lastly, during the 2021-22 season, the Cavaliers took home five All-AAC honors: Noah Dunn and JaJa Davis (First Team), Tyler Rodrigue (Second Team; Newcomer of the Year) and Mike Flenory (All-Defense). Dunn was also named an NAIA All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2021-22.

Additionally, several Cavaliers have gone on to play basketball professionally following their time under Jones, including Austin Butler and JaJa Davis.

Jones came to Montreat after serving the previous four years as an assistant coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Waxahachie, Texas.

During his time at SAGU, Jones was part of a coaching staff that took a program that had gone fourteen years without a winning season and turned them into a national power. Their winning seasons were highlighted by three straight appearances at the NAIA Division I National Tournament (2013-2015). Jones' 2013 squad had quite the season, going 33-5 and advancing to the NAIA Division I National Championship Game. The following season, Jones helped lead the team to a 26-6 record and a season that culminated with another top-10 national ranking.

Prior to his arrival at SAGU, Jones served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Oklahoma Wesleyan University, from 2009-2011. During his time at OWU, Jones helped guide the team to back-to-back NAIA Division II National Championship appearances, winning the title in 2009.

During his undergraduate career at OWU, Jones was a four-year member of the men's basketball team. Under the guidance of head coach Donnie Bostwick, Jones and his teammates helped turn around the program at OWU, and their three year run of NAIA tournament appearances culminated in a 35-2 record and NAIA Division II National Championship in 2009.
