KNOXVILLE, Tenn.— The Montreat College men's tennis team hit the road on Thursday afternoon for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup against Johnson University. Montreat secured a strong 5-2 victory by claiming the doubles point and winning four of the six singles matches. With the triumph, the Cavaliers improved to 4-8 (2-1 AAC), while Johnson dropped to 6-3 (0-2 AAC) on the year.
Montreat secured the doubles point with a convincing performance at the third position, where Youssef Idboufous and Fabrizio Moreno cruised to a 6-2 victory. On the top court, Lucas Descalzi and Vitor Monteiro battled through a tightly contested match before earning a 7-5 win, while Julian Stolevski and Paul Saemann dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision at No. 2.
In singles competition, the Cavs seized several straight-sets victories to help seal the team win. Monteiro delivered a commanding performance at position two with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Descalzi followed with a solid 6-3, 6-3 result on court three. At the fourth position, Idboufous earned a 6-4, 6-2 win, while Moreno rounded out the scoring with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph in the fifth flight.
On court six, Saemann played in the only singles match that went the distance, battling through a competitive contest before falling 5-7, 6-3, 0-1 (8-10) in the match tiebreak. At the top position, Ben Smith faced a tough challenge, dropping a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
Montreat will return to action at home on Thursday, March 19, when it hosts the University of Pikeville in Montreat, N.C.
