ATHENS, Tenn.— The Montreat College women's tennis squad battled the No. 3-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) team dual match on Wednesday afternoon. Despite their concerted efforts, the Cavaliers couldn't overcome their powerful opposition, dropping a 7-0 final in Tennessee. With the loss, the Cavs moved to 2-7 (1-2 AAC) on the campaign, while TWU climbed to 6-1 (3-0 AAC).
Montreat was unable to secure the doubles point as its pairs fell in two completed matches.
Catalina Pan and
Clara Roman finished at No. 1 with a 1-6 scoreline, while
Ana Marija Horvacki and
Yamile Cuiza ended on the second court with the same 1-6 result. The Cavaliers also forfeited the third doubles matchup.
In singles play, the visitors faced stiff challenges across all courts. Roman played in the top spot against the NAIA's No. 24-ranked player, posting a 0-6, 1-6 score. Pan, competing on the second court, was unable to overcome her opponent, resulting in a 1-6, 0-6 finish.
Cuiza recorded a 1-6, 1-6 final against the nation's eighth-ranked player in the third flight, while Horvacki ended with a 0-6, 1-6 result at No. 4.
Kathryn Salazar competed in the fifth singles clash, concluding her showdown 0-6, 0-6. The Cavs forfeited the match on the final court as well.
Jumping back into nonconference action, the Montreat College women's tennis team squares off against King University, an NCAA Division II program, on Tuesday, March 3. Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Bristol, Tenn.
