MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat College women's tennis team earned a strong 5-2 victory over Truett McConnell University on Friday afternoon in a home Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest. With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 2-3 (1-1 AAC), while the Bears dropped to 0-3 (0-1 AAC) on the season.
Montreat fell short in doubles action despite a hard-fought win on court one, where Catalina Pan and Clara Roman edged out their opponents 7-6 (7-3). The second flight saw Ana Marija Horvacki and Yamile Cuiza battle closely before they ultimately fell 6-7 (4-7). The third court did not feature a Cavalier pairing.
In singles action, Montreat showcased impressive performances across the lineup. Competing at the top spot, Pan secured a 7-5, 6-3 victory. Roman battled back from an early setback in the second flight, rallying to claim a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win. Cuiza continued the momentum from the third position, cruising to a straight-sets 6-3, 6-0 triumph.
Horvacki kept the Cavs rolling at No. 4, closing out her match with a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory. Kathryn Salazar added another point for Montreat from the fifth spot, defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-1. The final match from the sixth position did not include a Cavalier.
Looking ahead, Montreat will travel to Clemson, S.C., for a pair of high-profile matchups at the Grizzly Invitational. The Cavaliers will face No. 14 University of the Cumberlands on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m., before taking on No. 13 Georgia Gwinnett University at 4 p.m. later that afternoon at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.
