Cavs dominate in AAC opener

MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat College men's tennis team secured a commanding 6-1 victory over Truett McConnell University on Friday afternoon in a home Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup. With the result, Montreat improved to 3-3 (1-0 AAC), while TMU fell to 0-3 (0-1 AAC).

The Cavaliers captured the doubles point with dominant showings on courts one and three. Lucas Descalzi and Vitor Monteiro set the tone at the top flight, cruising to a 6-0 sweep on court one. Youssef Idboufous and Fabrizio Moreno were equally impressive at the third position, matching the shutout with a 6-0 victory of their own. Action on court two featured Julian Stolevski and Ben Smith, but the match went TMU's with the duo trailing 4-6.

Montreat carried its momentum into singles competition with another commanding stretch of play. Competing at the top spot in the lineup, Monteiro delivered a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory. Descalzi followed suit in the second flight, securing a 6-2, 6-2 win to extend the Cavaliers' advantage. Idboufous kept the pressure on from the third position, turning in a flawless 6-0, 6-0 performance to complete yet another straight-sets triumph for the hosts.

Paul Saemann kept the hosts rolling from the fourth spot in the lineup, earning a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory. Joaquin Hernandez followed with another strong outing on court five, securing a straight-sets win by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Nick Abramov rounded out singles play from the sixth position, battling hard but coming up short in a 0-6, 2-6 decision.

Looking ahead, Montreat will travel south for the Grizzly Invitational, where the Cavaliers are slated to take on No. 8 University of the Cumberlands on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m. The challenge continues later that afternoon with a 4 p.m. matchup against No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett University at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility in Clemson, S.C.
