MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat College women's tennis team hosted the Johnson University Royals in its first home match of the 2025 campaign on Wednesday. In the team dual, the Cavs secured their first victory under head coach
Marcos Salazar. The Cavaliers won the battle, 5-2.
Montreat started the day with the advantage after winning the doubles point by going 2-1 in the series.
Ainhoa Ordonez and
Chiharu Ito won their close contest, 7-6.
Clara Roman and
Annika Rojas were paired and won their lone set, 6-3.
Ali Zakariasen and
Kate Hutson lost 6-1 in their doubles pairing.
The Cavaliers put their doubles point to good use and won the first three singles showdowns. With the wins, the Cavaliers secured the team victory with four points right out of the gate. Ito was victorious 6-0 and 6-1 in her dual. Roman and Ordonez also prevailed in two sets. Roman triumphed in a close matchup, 7-6 and 6-2. Ordonez came out on top with scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
Rojas lost her clash in three sets. She won the first 7-6 and lost the second 6-3. In the tiebreak, she couldn't get to 10 points first and lost 10-4. Although the match was already won by the Cavs, Zakariasen put a cherry on top when she achieved victory in her match after just one set by a score of 8-5.
Kate Hutson was on the other side of an 8-5 scoreline in her loss.
Montreat will continue its playing form with five team matches in the next six days. In the busy stretch, the Cavs will face tough foes like on Friday, they will visit both No. 19 SCAD Atlanta and No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett College. Those competitions are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
