BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Montreat's men's tennis program faced off against the Guilford College Quakers in a team dual match held Saturday afternoon at Charles D. Owen High School. The Cavaliers triumphed by a score of 6-1, losing just two matches overall.
The Cavs stole the doubles point by winning two of the three matchups.
Paul Saemann and
Joaquin Hernandez won their match, 6-2.
Vitor Monteiro and
Jayden McConnell won their doubles match with a 6-0 sweep.
Youssef Idboufous and
Fabrizio Moreno lost by a score of 6-3.
In singles play, Guilford took just one match from the Cavs. It was the last match left playing at No. 1 with Monteiro dropping a close contest in the tiebreak, 6-4, 3-6, 7-10. Every other Cavalier match resulted in a win.
Lucas Descalzi won at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2. Hernandez added another point to the team score with his 6-0, 6-4 victory. Saemann won both of his two sets of play by scores of 6-2.
Ben Smith won his match, 6-4, 6-2, and
Nick Abramov also came away victoriously with his 6-0, 6-1 win on the sixth court.
The players with the most games won were Hernandez and Saemann, each with 18 victories. Behind the duo, Monteiro had 15 wins to his name on the day. Descalzi, Smith and Abramov concluded their day with 12. McConnell had six, while both Moreno and Idboufous had three.
The next event for the men's tennis team this fall will be another team dual match against Mars Hill University on Oct. 16 in Mars Hill, N.C.
