Men’s wrestling concludes Hawk Duals in fifth

MONTGOMERY, Ala.— The Montreat men's wrestling team competed at the Hawk Duals in Montgomery, Ala. Friday afternoon, squaring off against a combination of four NAIA and NCAA programs. In the event hosted by Huntingdon College, the Cavaliers dropped all four of their duals, ending fifth of five institutions and falling to 1-10 overall and 1-3 against Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) programs this season.

Going up against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers to begin the day, the Cavs faced an early uphill battle. A pair of forfeits put Montreat behind out of the gate, and it secured just one triumph across the 10 weight classes. Bryson McCraw's 10-4 decision got the Cavaliers on the scoreboard, but UWSP claimed the dual, 49-3.

Montreat's most competitive matchup came against the Truett McConnell University Bears, a fellow AAC program that entered the day receiving votes in the latest national poll. Mikai Brinson and McCraw notched high-scoring tech falls at 141 and 157, respectively, and Dalton Towe claimed a forfeit victory at 174. Milosz Gargol tallied the most impressive win of the day, pinning the NAIA's 23rd-ranked wrestler in the 184-lb weight class. Despite the noteworthy results, TMU scored 11 points across the final two bouts to win the dual, 35-22.

Brinson and Dylan Hogan proved responsible for all eight of the Cavs' points during their 42-8 defeat at the hands of the hosts. The former utilized a 19-3 tech fall to register five team points, while the latter scored an 18-13 decision; however, Huntingdon seized the other eight bouts to create the separation between the two sides.

The Cavaliers concluded the day by battling another NAIA team receiving votes in the national poll. Brinson and Hogan recorded decision victories at 141 and 165, respectively, but the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders ultimately won the dual via a 44-6 scoreline.

Montreat stays in Montgomery, Ala. tomorrow for the Hawk Classic Open, another event hosted by Huntingdon College. Tournament bouts are slated to start at 10 a.m.
