CANTON, N.C.— The Montreat men's wrestling team hosted the West Virginia University Institute of Technology Golden Bears at Pisgah High School in Canton, N.C. Wednesday evening. Before today, the two foes had met four times, with Montreat winning every dual by at least 28 points. This time, the tides turned, and West Virginia Tech won its first dual against the Cavs by a score of 34-22.
The Golden Bears jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead after a Montreat forfeit and a pin in the first two bouts.
Mikai Brinson stopped the run when he put the Cavs on the score sheet with a 24-7 tech fall.
At 149, Cavalier
Robert Branson was pinned by Troy Harris of WVU Tech in 2:13 to keep the Golden Bears in front. Montreat answered with 12 points of its own, trimming the deficit to 18-17 thanks to a WVU Tech forfeit and a pin from
Dylan Hogan. The Golden Bears responded with a pin of their own at 174, however, with Ryan Turney triumphing over
Josh Mojica-Smith.
The last three bouts all ended differently as the first was a 16-0 tech fall from Montreat's
Milosz Gargol. The second was a pin from Jackson Evans of WVU Tech over
Dre Bonner. The concluding bout of the dual was a major decision for Maxwell Underwood over Cavalier
Elijah Amaya-Perez.
On deck, the Cavs will wrestle this weekend from Jan. 24-25 at the Missouri Valley Invitational, hosted by Missouri Valley College, in Marshall, Mo.
