CLEVELAND, Ga.— The Montreat men's wrestling team faced a total of three teams at the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Duals hosted by Truett McConnell University in Georgia on Saturday. Ultimately, the Cavs dropped competitions against No. 2 Life, No. 4 Southeastern and (RV) St. Thomas to move to 3-10 (3-6 AAC) on the year.
The Cavaliers opened the day with a tough test, the No. 4-ranked Southeastern University Fire. Montreat picked up a forfeit win at 125, and
Seth Williamson lost narrowly at 197 in a 7-6 decision, but SEU won the other eight bouts with three tech falls, three pins and two forfeits to take the matchup 48-6.
The Cavs then battled St. Thomas University in their ensuing dual. STU utilized five different methods (decision, major decision, tech fall, pin, forfeit) to take the initial five matches and lead 24-0.
Caleb Johnson-White got the Cavaliers on the board with a pin at 165, and Montreat notched a forfeit win at 174. After a forfeit by the Cavs at 184 sealed the outcome of the dual,
Seth Williamson and
Grant Trotter each tallied fall victories to close the gap to 30-24.
Ending the day against the No. 2 Life University Running Eagles, Montreat dropped the first three matches to trail 18-0.
Braden Wharton then hung on to claim an 8-7 decision triumph at 149 to hand the Cavaliers three points. Despite Wharton's win, the Cavs fell in the remaining contests via four tech falls, a pin and a forfeit to lose 50-3.
Men's wrestling travels to Tennessee for the Cumberland Open next Saturday, Feb. 3.
