MARIETTA, Ga.— The Montreat men's wrestling team saw its program-record 4-dual win streak halted Wednesday night in Marietta, Ga. when the No. 2-ranked Life University Running Eagles defeated the Cavaliers, 55-0. With the loss, the Cavs dropped to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action.
Life (5-1, 2-0 AAC) won all 10 bouts against the Cavaliers, and it asserted itself early with a trio of pins and two tech falls to vault in front by a 28-0 scoreline.
Dalton Towe pieced together one of Montreat's best individual performances of the night when he nearly snagged a win at 165. Down 5-1 entering the third period, Towe scored three points to give himself a shot at grabbing a come-from-behind triumph. Unfortunately for the Cavs, Towe just ran out of time and fell via a 5-4 decision.
The Running Eagles' final four wrestlers of the night, all of whom rank inside the NAIA's top 10 in their respective weight classes, tallied pins to conclude the evening.
Antonio Petraglia put up a valiant effort for the Cavaliers against the NAIA's No. 1-ranked wrestler in the 197-lb weight class, battling for over five minutes before eventually falling.
When it was all said and done, the hosts seized a 55-0 victory, ending Montreat's win streak in the process.
The Montreat men's wrestling team hopes to start a new win streak this Saturday during a senior day tri-dual inside McAlister Gymnasium. Matches between the Cavaliers, the (RV) Brewton-Parker College Barons and the No. 12-ranked Reinhardt University Eagles are slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. in Montreat, N.C.
