Wrestling’s Comeback Bid Falls Short at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C.— After finding itself down 21-0 on the road to the Greensboro College Pride Monday evening, the Montreat wrestling team nearly completed an impressive comeback, but ultimately fell by a score of 25-23 to the hosts. The Cavaliers now sit at 4-8 on the season.

Greensboro (4-8) utilized a pair of pins, a decision and a Montreat forfeit to jump out to its sizable 21-0 advantage; however, the Cavs began their attempted comeback in the fifth match. Braden Wharton notched a pin in only 1:39 to get his team on the board with six points at 133.

Wharton's pin shifted the momentum in the visitors' favor as the Pride only notched a major decision following the Hickory, N.C. native's bout. Landon Chambers controlled his match at 149, registering a dominant 21-4 tech fall in 4:06, while Taquel Young used a major decision at 157 to pull the Cavs within striking distance. Chambers, the No. 11 wrestler in the NAIA at 149, is now 18-4 on the season, while Young, the No. 15 wrestler in the country at 157, currently holds a 10-1 individual record.

Following a Branson Bennett forfeit victory at 165 that pulled Montreat within four (25-21), Easton Griffin needed more than a decision at 174 to tie the team scores. Griffin fought valiantly, and collected a triumph; however, his 3-0 decision paired with a team point penalty was not enough to overcome the squad's initial deficit as the Cavs dropped the match by two points.

Wrestling now travels to West Palm Beach, Fla. to wrestle Keiser University and No. 7 Southeastern University on Saturday. Matches against the Seahawks are slated to start at 11:00 a.m., and the dual against the Fire is set for 12:30 p.m.
