DANVILLE, VA.— The Montreat wrestling program spent its Sunday wrestling at the Cougar Duals, hosted by Averett University in Danville, Va. Over the course of five duals against a combination of NCAA Division II and Division III foes, the Cavaliers claimed their first two team victories of the season to move to 2-5 overall.
Montreat's day started off with a team victory over Greensboro College, 30-12. The Pride won the first two bouts via decision to establish an early 6-0 edge, but the Cavaliers battled back with 30 consecutive points.
Landon Chambers recorded a tech fall win (16-1) over his opponent, while
Branson Bennett utilized a 9-3 decision to gain three points for his side.
Easton Griffin (1:50),
Alec Baynard (4:07) and
Antonio Petraglia (0:29) all registered victories via pin before
Seth Williamson earned an 11-2 majority decision to finish out the 30-point run. Greensboro won the final bout at 285 to bring the final tally to 30-12.
Later that afternoon, the Cavaliers utilized two pins and five forfeits to cruise past Emory & Henry College, 41-11. After the Wasps claimed the initial bout with a tech fall win, the Cavaliers went on another extended victory streak. Griffin,
Tyler McDonald, Petraglia and Williamson all claimed forfeit victories.
Braden Wharton also seized a forfeit victory of his own shortly after Emory & Henry won its second bout of the dual.
Jonathan Zafra (3:32) and
Ethan Bennett (0:43) each pinned their opponents to close out the dual and topple the Wasps by 30 points.
While the Cavaliers dropped three team duals on the day, several individuals did tally victories in their respective bouts.
Freddy Guardiola recorded a forfeit win during the Cavaliers 42-6 defeat against Glenville State College, and Chambers registered a 12-6 decision for Montreat's lone win during a 38-3 defeat against the hosts. Meanwhile, four Cavaliers snagged individual victories in the 28-18 loss to Limestone University.
Branson Bennett (8-3) and Williamson (7-6) won decisions over the Saints, while Chambers (1:50) and Wharton (3:46) racked up six points each via pin and injury, respectively.
Montreat earned three additional victories out of four extra matches on Sunday.
Ray Grayble claimed a 7-0 decision over an opponent from Greensboro,
Louis Mehaffey recorded a 14-3 major decision over an opponent from Averett and Williamson (1:56) pinned an opponent from Emory & Henry.

Now off until the new year, Montreat Wrestling returns to the mat on Jan. 9 at the Emmanuel Duals in Franklin Springs, Ga. Matches are scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.
