MONTREAT, N.C.— In the first-ever Montreat wrestling home dual, the Cavaliers fell to the 14th-best team in the country, the Campbellsville University Tigers, by a score of 51-6. With the defeat, the Cavaliers snapped a two-dual win streak and moved to a 3-6 record for the inaugural season.
The Cavs surrendered three matches by forfeit, which immediately gave the Tigers 18 points toward their overall team score; however, in the first legitimate bout of the afternoon, Braden Wharton came away with a decisive victory over his opponent at 133.
The freshman, who moved to 5-2 on the year with the individual win, pinned his CU counterpart to even the dual at 6-6.
Following the triumph by Wharton, Campbellsville utilized six wins over Montreat, including four pins, to take control of the matchup.
Alex Chester forced his opposition to a major decision, while Seth Williamson fell via tech fall. Taquel Young avenged his loss in the 157-pound battle with an 18-9 major decision victory in his exhibition round.
The wrestling team will now take on Southwest Virginia Community College in an exhibition matchup on Wednesday. First match in McAlister Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
