MARIETTA, Ga.— In a contest against the No. 2-ranked team in the NAIA, the Montreat wrestling team fell to the Life University Running Eagles Wednesday night. The Cavaliers moved to 0-3 in the inaugural season with the 49 to -1 defeat on the road following a mat violation.
Landon Chambers forced a major decision in the 141-pound bout, while Branson Bennett only gave up a 10-3 decision to his opponent at 149 after the Cavs had fallen down 12-0 early.
Taquel Young then fought back from a double-digit deficit to surrender just a 15-12 defeat as Montreat crept closer to an individual victory.
Easton Griffin nearly captured that triumph, but dropped a close 6-3 decision to his opponent at 165 before Life ran away with the competition in the final matches.
The Cavaliers will now travel to Lakeland, Fla. to wrestle teams at the Fire Duals hosted by Southeastern University. Montreat will compete against SEU, Reinhardt and Keiser at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., respectively.
