MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College baseball team got off to a strong start during their Thursday afternoon matchup against Saginaw Valley State but were not able to maintain the early momentum in a 16-3 loss to the Cardinals.
The Cavaliers scored all three of their runs in the first inning. First baseman Tray Hill (JR/Chickamauga, GA), right fielder Dylan Jones (SR/Leicester, NC), and third baseman John Cassandra (SO/Cumming, GA) all delivered RBIs during the first inning to take the early lead. From there, the Cardinals shut down the Montreat bats while scoring in every inning except the fourth. The game was still within reach for Montreat heading into the seventh inning where they trailed 7-3. A flurry of offense for the Cardinals led to nine runs crossing the plate in the seventh as they ran away with the win.
Jones went 2-3 for the game including a double and Cassandra went 1-2 with a double. Center fielder Danilo De Armas (SO/Miami, FL) went 1-3 with a run scored.
The team has a short turnaround as they head to Georgia on Friday, March 11th for a bout with Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Reinhardt. The teams will play at 6pm on Friday and will follow that up with a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1pm.
MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College baseball team suffered a 10-6 defeat to Indiana-Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cavaliers started the game well and held a 2-1 lead after two innings of play. However a series of costly errors in the top of the third helped spur the Wildcats to five runs and into the lead. Indiana-Wesleyan would add four more runs in the fifth inning to pull away and earn the victory.
Left fielder Daniel Branon (SR/Greensboro, NC) went 1-3 with the hit being a two-run home run. Catcher Nick Bray (JR/Alpharetta, GA) went 2-4 and added a home run as well as two RBI. First baseman Chase Day (JR/Easley,SC) went 3-4 with two runs scored.

Milligan College, TN - The Montreat College baseball team opened up play in the Appalachian Athletic Conference over the weekend, making the short haul across the border to take on rival Milligan College. The young Cavaliers squad was competitive for much of the weekend but was unable to grab a win as the Buffs swept the three game series.
In the first game on Saturday, Milligan got on the board with a run in the first but the Cavaliers countered when left fielder Dylan Jones (SR/Leicester, NC) drove in catcher Nick Bray (JR/Alpharetta, GA) with a base hit in the third. The Buffs would counter with two runs in the bottom portion of the third and added another run in the fifth inning. Down 4-1, the Cavaliers responded in the sixth inning when right fielder Daniel Branon (SR/Greensboro, NC) was able to score off of an error. Later in the frame, a base hit from center fielder Danilo De Armas (SO/Miami, FL) drove in shortstop Robert Hernandez (FR/Miami, FL) to cut the Milligan lead to 4-3. The Buffs would again answer with a run in the bottom of the sixth to grow their lead to 5-3. In the top of the seventh inning, the Cavaliers pressed forward and got another run when first baseman Chase Day (JR/Easley,SC) drove in Tray Hill (JR/Chickamauga, GA) with a clutch hit to make the score 5-4. Despite the growing momentum, the Cavaliers were unable to get the tying run across and the Buffs escaped with the victory.
Montreat collected nine hits over the course of the game. Danilo De Armas and Dylan Jones both went 2-4 with an RBI while third baseman John Cassandra (SO/Cumming, GA) went 2-2 and reached base a third time on a walk. Taylor Cornelius (SR/Lakeland, FL) (1-1) went the distance on the mound for the Cavaliers, giving up five runs on ten hits over six innings of work.
In the second game on Saturday, Milligan got things going with two runs in the first inning but the Cavaliers responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Chase Day scored on a Daniel Branon groundout and John Cassandra later scored on a passed ball. Montreat rolled into the lead after a four run fifth inning pushed the score to 6-2. Nick Bray singled to drive in Robert Hernandez and Dylan Jones would single later in the inning to drive in Bray. Daniel Branon followed with a timely hit that drove in pinch runner Frank Perez (FR/Miami, FL) and Chase Day. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Cavaliers failed to pad their lead in the top half of the seventh. Milligan put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs to tie the game and push it into extra innings. In the top of the eight, Robert Hernandez reached base after being hit at the plate and promptly advanced to second on a stolen base. Danilo De Armas chose a clutch moment for his only hit of the game and his single drove in Hernandez to give Montreat a 7-6 lead. However, Milligan refused to be denied and took home the win after scoring two runs in the bottom of the eight to squeeze out an 8-7 win.
Daniel Branon went 1-4 with 3 RBI while Chase Day went 2-3 with two runs scored. Nick Bray went 2-5 with one RBI while also scoring a run. Pitcher Braeden Daniels (FR/Statesville, NC) took a no decision after giving up four runs off of seven hits in six innings of work. Daniel Collins (FR/Guyton, GA) took the loss after giving up four runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.
In the Sunday finale, the Buffs got their bats going while stifling the Montreat offense in an 11-1 win. Montreat was limited to two hits and got only one run when Danilo De Armas scored off of a Dylan Jones fielder's choice.
Montreat (4-13, 0-3 AAC) will be back in action on Wednesday, March 9th when they host Indiana-Wesleyan University at Newell Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm.
