BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC - The Montreat College softball team got back in the win column on Wednesday, rebounding from a close loss in game one of a double header against Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Union to take a 6-4 victory in the second game.

In the first game, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning and added two more runs in the third to take a commanding lead. The Cavalier's defense clamped down from there and the team got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Dezaree Avallone (SR/Shallotte, NC) drove a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall for a solo home run. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cavaliers tried to mount a rally and cut the lead to 6-3 when a Megan Recher (SR/Waxhaw, NC) double brought in two base runners. Montreat was unable to capitalize any further an Union took a 6-3 victory.

Megan Recher led the way for the Cavaliers with two hits and two RBI. Hunter Campbell (JR/Lincolnton, NC) and Karley Yeager (JR/Arden, NC) also picked up a pair of hits.

In the second game, Union again got going early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. However, the Cavaliers were up to the challenge and they opened the game with four straight hits to tie the game at 3-3. The score would stay the same until the bottom of the fourth inning when Montreat would again piece together four hits and a three-run inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Bulldogs would score a run in the top of the seventh but pitcher Lauren Rowell (SO/Lancaster, SC) kept command and sealed the 6-4 win for the Cavaliers.

Montreat collected 13 hits for the game from seven different players. Karley Yeager was outstanding, going 4-4 while Dezaree Avallone was 2-4 with a pair of RBI. Amber Smith (SR/Boonville, NC) and Sydney McAbee (FR/Asheville, NC) also got two hits apiece for Montreat. After a shaky first inning, Rowell was solid on the mound, giving up only five hits and three earned runs in her complete game victory.

The team will be back in action tomorrow as they welcome Truett-McConnell to Roxy Hines Field for a double header set to begin at 2pm.

LAURINBURG, NC - The Montreat College softball team entered spring break on a high note, picking up their first road win of the season before ultimately splitting a double-header against St. Andrews in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Friday.

In the first game, the Knights took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning and that would hold until the fourth inning when a Desirae Bebber (JR/Catfish, NC) triple drove in Megan Recher (SR/Waxhaw, NC) to tie the game at 1-1. In the next at bat, Ashley Hurd (SO/Winston-Salem, NC) singled up the middle to drive in Bebber and give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead. The two sides would remain scoreless until the top of the seventh, when Hurd scored from third base off of a wild pitch from the Knights to push the Montreat lead to 3-1. St. Andrews would make things interesting by adding a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but Montreat was able to close out the game and earn the victory.

Bebber and Morgan Meredith (SO/Coalfield, TN) led the Cavaliers with two hits each. Amber Smith (SR/Boonville, NC) went the distance on the mound, giving up only one earned run on five hits.

In the second game, Montreat jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Dezaree Avallone (SR/Shallotte, NC) drilled a two-run home run in the first inning, but the Knights got hot offensively and racked up seven runs in the first three innings on their way to a 10-2 win in five innings. Aubree Sluder (FR/Asheville, NC) collected two hits for Montreat.

The team will be back in action on Wednesday, March 30th when they host Union College for a double-header set to begin at 2pm.
