MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College baseball tream rebounded from a rough first game to grab a crucial conference victory over #18 Bryan College on Saturday at Newell Field.
In the first game, the Lions used a seven-run second inning to jump out to an 8-0 lead on their way to an 11-1 victory. Montreat got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Dylan Jones (SR/Leicester, NC) blasted a solo home run but they were unable to get any more offense going and were limited to five hits on the game. Conner Bryant (JR/Sandy, OR) collected two of those hits with Robert Hernandez (FR/Miami, FL) and Grayson Snipes (JR/Lancaster, SC) also getting hits for the Cavalier's.
In the second game, the Lions struck first again with a pair of runs in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Montreat got things going in the third when Conner Bryant got a base hit. Bradley Oakes (JR/Asheville, NC) stepped in and drilled the first pitch over the wall for a home run to tie the game at 2-2. Later in the inning after a Grayson Snipes single, Tray Hill (JR/Chickamauga, GA) hit the first pitch he saw into the pines beyond the Newell Field wall to put the Cavaliers on top 4-2. Bryan would score a run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3 but the Cavaliers would get an equalizer when Grayson Snipes scored after advancing around the bases courtesy of a walk, a passed ball, and two wild pitches.
Heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Lions rallied and strung together a series of hits to ties the game at 5-5. With two runners on base and two outs, Kyle Nyenhuis (SR/Charlotte, NC) was able to get out of the inning after striking out pinch hitter Hudson Clare. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cavaliers would see a Chase Day (JR/Easley,SC) groundout and Robert Hernandez strikeout leave them with two outs and no one on base. However, this would allow Conner Bryant to provide some heroics for the home crowd as he drove a 1-1 pitch over the wall for a game-winning walk-off home run to clinch the 6-5 win for Montreat. Three of the seven hits and all of the runs for Montreat came courtesy of the long ball and Hill's shot was his 14th of the season which ties him for the conference lead.
