Black Mountain, NC - The Montreat College men's soccer got back to their winning ways on Tuesday, making a strong statement in a 5-1 non-conference victory over Bob Jones University at Howard Fisher Memorial Field.
The Cavaliers (3-2-3) opened up well in the first half, netting their first goal courtesy of a penalty kick from Ryan Buick (SO/Banbury, England ). Later in the half, Dylan MacFarlane (SR/Somerset West, South Africa) found the back of the net off of a Dale McClelland (SO/Ayr, Scotland) assist. Near the end of the half, Esgardo Arroyo (SR/Buford, Ga. ) found Jake Mathis who scored the third and final goal of the first half.
In the seond half, McClelland earned his second assist of the match, feeding Buick's second goal. Blake Kennedy (JR/Gladstone, Australia ) netted the final tally for the Cavaliers, sending a shot into the goal off of a corner kick.
The Cavaliers will next travel to Florida for a couple of non-conference matches. Montreat will kick off the trip with a visit to Trinity College on Friday, October 9. Match time is 7pm.
Barbourville, KY - The Montreat College men's soccer team traveled to Kentucky on Wednesday evening to take on #25 Union College (KY) in a showdown of AAC rivals. The two teams battled wet conditions and the highly touted match-up played out as advertised with the home team using an overtime goal to propel them to a 2-1 victory.
The first half saw both sides show their prowess on defense and finish the 45-minute period locked in a scoreless tie. Just over a minute into the second half, a Montreat mishap led to an own goal that put Union on top 1-0. The game would remain there until the 85th minute, when Esgardo Arroyo (SR/Buford, Ga. ) scored an equalizer off of a corner kick to make the score 1-1.
Unable to settle the match in regulation, the two teams went into overtime. Just over six minutes into the extra frame, the Bulldogs scored off of a corner kick of their own to secure the match 2-1.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, October 3 as they host out-of-conference opponent Hiwassee College at 3:30pm at Howard Fisher Memorial Field. This match is part of a number of athletic events scheduled around the 2015 Montreat College Homecoming.
Cleveland, GA - The Montreat College men's soccer team traveled to Georgia to take on AAC foe Truett-McConnell on Saturday. A closely contested contest would end without a clear winner, as the two sides settled for a 2-2 draw.
After the Bears got on the board first with a goal early in the 18th minute, the Cavaliers got a scoring strike from Dale McClelland (SO/Ayr, Scotland) to even the score at 1-1. The Montreat equalizer would set off a scoring flurry at the end of the first half as the Bears countered six minutes later to regain the lead at 2-1. Not to be outdone, it took Montreat 46 seconds to find the back of the net again, this time courtesy of a Blake Kennedy (JR/Gladstone, Australia ) goal.
The two sides would enter the half tied a 2-2 and that would wind up being the end result as a mixture of stout defense and timely saves prevented either side from grabbing the victory. The Cavaliers got 9 saves courtesy of Miguel Tudon (SO/Vila-Real, Spain), three of which came in the two overtime periods that followed regulation play.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, September 29 as they travel to take on Union (Ky.) in another important AAC tilt. Game time is scheduled for 7pm.
