BLUEFIELD, VA - For the second consecutive game the Montreat College women's basketball team saw a late-game charge come up just short as a late field goal lifted Bluefield College to a 60-57 win over the Cavaliers.

After a closely contested first period, the Rams reeled off an 18-2 run to take a 25-9 lead midway through the second period. Montreat (6-8, 3-4 AAC) responded with a 10-4 run to close out the period and went into halftime down ten points to the host Rams.

In the third period, the Cavaliers continued to chip away at the lead and they would get to within one point of Bluefield on four occasions. A Shannon Jackson (SR/Charleston, SC) bucket gave Montreat their first lead, 45-44, with 8:33 left in the final period. The two teams would exchange the lead eight times in the fourth period. After falling behind with just over a minute to play, Jackson scored again, this time off of a pass from Darah DeWalt (FR/Charlotte, NC), giving the Cavaliers a 57-55 lead with 57 seconds left in the contest. These points would prove to be the last ones for Montreat as Bluefield finished the game scoring the final five points to escape with the victory.

Shannon Jackson was a force for the Cavaliers, leading the team with 18 points while pulling down nine rebounds. Niroshka Perez (JR/Asheville, NC) chipped in 12 points while also pulling down nine rebounds. Darah DeWalt and Destiny Elkins (FR/Burnsville, NC) each scored 8 points while Arianna Williams (FR/Lawrenceville, GA) pulled down seven rebounds while dishing out three assists.

"The last two games have been hard to swallow," said head coach Meghan Austin. "Close games are always tough; however we are optimistic that God has a plan and that He is going to use these situations to make us a stronger and better team down the road somewhere."

The Cavaliers will look to snap their two-game skid when they host Columbia College in an AAC matchup on Thursday, January 7th. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm at McAlister Gymnasium.

Waleska, GA - The Montreat College women's basketball team suffered a tough 64-62 loss to Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Reinhardt University on Saturday afternoon.

The Cavaliers (6-7, 3-3 AAC) got off to a rough start and found themselves down 32-21 at halftime. However, Montreat would emerge from the break with renewed energy and cut the lead to seven points heading into the fourth period. After the Eagles pushed their lead back to 9 points, the Cavaliers reeled off a 10-0 run to take a 48-47 lead with 6:40 to play. The teams would battle back-and-forth until Reinhardt hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining to take a 62-57 lead.

The Cavaliers refused to go away and got a huge three-pointer from Niroshka Perez (JR/Asheville, NC) with 18 seconds left to make the score 62-60. After Shannon Jackson (SR/Charleston, SC) stole the ensuing inbounds pass, Perez got fouled and nailed two free throws to tie the game with 9 seconds to play. The Eagles took the ball down the court and, after Jackson was called for a foul with 0.5 seconds to play, hit two free throws to escape with the victory.

Hannah Calloway (SO/Swannanoa, NC) led all scorers with 20 points, hitting 5-11 three-pointers. Arianna Williams (FR/Lawrenceville, GA) added 17 points and seven rebounds while Darah DeWalt (FR/Charlotte, NC) and Shannon Jackson combined to pull down 19 rebounds.

Montreat, NC - The Montreat College women's basketball team returned from their Christmas break in strong fashion, defeating Brenau 71-65 on Wednesday afternoon in McAlister Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Cavaliers (6-6, 3-2 AAC) got even with a Golden Tigers team that defeated Montreat in the season opener. The Cavaliers got off to a strong start and took a 41-37 lead into halftime. After Brenau cut the lead to one after the third period, Montreat used a late push to earn the victory.

As has been the case all season, Montreat was able to share the scoring load, as five players reached double figures in the points column. Darah DeWalt (FR/Charlotte, NC) led the way with 16 points and added 8 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Niroshka Perez (JR/Asheville, NC) scored 13 points and led the team with five assists. Shannon Jackson (SR/Charleston, SC) picked up a double-double grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds to go with 10 points. Hannah Calloway (SO/Swannanoa, NC) and Arianna Williams (FR/Lawrenceville, GA) also scored ten points for the victorious Cavaliers.

"As a coach we always get a little nervous about our first game back after Christmas break," explained head coach Meghan Austin. "I am extremely proud of our players tonight. They have put in hard work since returning from break and that showed and paid off tonight. We executed our game plan and played with intensity. It's fun to watch us grow and continue to get better.

Coach Austin would go on to add," We got some big plays down the stretch from multiple people including big rebounds by Shannon Jackson and a clutch three from Darah DeWalt. When we play together as a team we are hard to beat."

After the conclusion of the game, the Cavaliers conducted a free basketball clinic for area youth. Regarding the event, Coach Austin said, "I feel that it is important to give the youth in the community someone to look up to. We have great student-athletes in our program and my hope is that they can be role models for the younger generation. Our players had a great time interacting with youth and teaching them basketball drills and ways to have fun while being active."

The Cavaliers, winners of three out of their past four games, will look to get 2016 off to a good start as they travel to take on Reinhardt University in an AAC matchup on Saturday, January 2nd. Game time is set for 2pm.
