Montreat College head women's basketball coach Meghan Austin has announced the signing of Bayleigh Ponds to a letter of intent to compete for the Cavaliers in 2016-2017. 

Ponds is a natve of Columbia, SC and is a recent graduate of Richland Northeast High School. The guard earned All-Region honors in 2016 while leading her school the the state playoffs. Ponds also excelled in soccer where she split time at forward and goalie. 

"Bayleigh is a long and lanky athlete that will be able to play multiple positions for us next season", said Coach Austin. "I am anticipating her versatility to add another dimension to what we can do on both sides of the floor."

Bayleigh is the daughter of Johnny and Taura Ponds and plans to major in Business Administration.

MONTREAT, NC - Montreat College women's basketball head coach Meghan Austin has announced the signing of Sienna Hicks to a letter of intent to compete for the Cavaliers for the 2016-2017 school year.

Sienna, a 5'6" guard from Greenville, SC will graduate this spring from Greenville High School. During her high school playing career she has been named the Defensive Player of the Year on her team three times while also being named to All-Tournament and All-Region teams. She has played AAU basketball for the team One Unit and was recently selected to compete in the 10th annual Spartanburg vs. Greenvillle FCA All-Star Basketball Challenge.  

"I am excited that Sienna has decided to join our Montreat College family," said Coach Austin. "She has a passion for defense and plays extremely hard. I have enjoyed getting to know her and her family over the last year and couldn't have asked for a better all-around person to be a Cavalier."  

Sienna has also excelled academically and is a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. She plans to major in accounting at Montreat and is the daughter of Ricky and Tracy Hicks.

KINGSPORT, TN - After a memorable run that saw them defeat three straight higher ranked opponents, the Montreat College women's basketball team fell to #2 seed Tennessee-Wesleyan 72-58 in the championship game of the 2016 Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament. 

The final score was no indicator of the competitiveness of the game as the Cavaliers kept things close until the final moments. After battling to a 36-30 deficit after the first half, the Cavaliers got to within 52-50 after the third period. Back-to-back baskets from Shannon Jackson (SR/Charleston, SC) gave the Cavaliers a 54-52 lead moments into the final period but the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to make the score 60-54 with 6:06 to play. The Cavaliers would keep battling but could not regain the lead and the Bulldogs used some clutch shots and free throws late to break the game open in the final moments. 

In her final game for Montreat, Shannon Jackson led the team with 15 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Niroshka Perez (JR/Asheville, NC) also scored 15 points and knocked down 3-4 three-point attempts. Darah DeWalt (FR/Charlotte, NC) scored 11 points and added five rebounds while Arianna Williams (FR/Lawrenceville, GA) collected 11 rebounds and five assists to go along with eight points. 

In recognition of their outstanding performances throughout the tournament, Shannon Jackson, Niroshka Perez, and Darah DeWalt all earned a spot on the AAC All-Tournament Team.

After finishing the 2014-2015 season with a 2-28 mark, the Cavaliers showed a huge improvement this season and finish with a 14-18 mark, including eight wins in the competitive AAC.
