MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College women's basketball team picked up a 75-67 win over Allen University on Saturday afternoon in McAlister Gym.
The Cavaliers (8-7, 5-6 AAC) took control early and raced to a 17-8 lead after the first period. However, the Yellow Jackets responded and used an 11-point swing in the second period to take a 31-29 lead into halftime. Montreat came out in the second half and re-gained the lead and was able to hold on to avenge their early-season loss to Allen.
Darah DeWalt (SO/Charlotte, NC) had another outstanding game for Montreat, leading all players with 31 points on 12-16 shooting. DeWalt was a perfect 3-3 from the three-point line and hit all four of her free throws while also pulling down eight rebounds. Jasmine Celestin (JR/Apopka, FL) scored 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists while Camilla Drake (FR/Hickory, NC) scored 12 points and nabbed seven rebounds.
"Today was a great team win," said head coach Meghan Austin. "We played hard and we executed when it counted. Our post players played well today, starting with Darah DeWalt, as well as Camilla Drake and Jasmine Celestin. We won the rebounding battle and got to the free throw line, which are key to our success."
The Cavaliers shot 48% (26-54) from the field, with the team combining for 18 assists. The Montreat defense held Allen to a 29% shooting clip while forcing 18 turnovers.
Montreat will be back in action on Monday, January 16th when they play Wofford College in an exhibition matchup at 6pm.
WEST POINT, GA - The Montreat College women's basketball team suffered a 69-39 setback against Point University on Wednesday night in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
The Cavaliers (7-7, 4-6 AAC) found it tough to get going offensively, socring only seven points in the first period and five in the second to fall behind 38-12 at halftime. Montreat played the Skyhawks evenly throughout the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome as Point rolled to the win.
Sienna Hicks (FR/Greenville, SC), Darah DeWalt (SO/Charlotte, NC), and Katie Dillon (SO/Charlotte, NC) all scored eight points for Montreat, who shot only 33% (14-42) from the floor. The Cavaliers did hold a 35-30 rebounding advantage but were hindered by 37 turnovers.
The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 14 when they host Allen University at 2pm in McAlister Gymnasium.
MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College women's basketball team dropped a 68-62 decision to Bluefield College on Tuesday night action in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
The Cavaliers (6-6, 3-5 AAC) got off to a hot start and led 20-10 after the first period. The Rams responded with a late second half run and cut the Montreat lead to 28-25 at halftime. The Cavaliers hung tough throughout the third period, pushing their lead to six points but hit a cold spell offensively in the final period when the Rams went on a late 10-2 run to take the victory.
The Cavaliers will be back in action on Thursday, Janaury 5th when they travl to play Columbia College at 5:30pm.
