MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College men's basketball team pushed their winning streak to three games and avenged an early-season loss as they defeated Allen University 94-90 on Saturday night in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
The Cavaliers (13-3, 7-3 AAC) fell behind the Yellow Jackets 8-2 early in the contest but soon made up the difference while using a 14-3 run to take a 40-27 lead with 6:20 to go in the first half. Allen would respond and cut the lead to 44-43 late in the frame but two baskets by Jeron Hemphill (SO/Morganton, NC) gave Montreat a 48-43 lead at halftime.
In the second half, both teams played at a high level and the result was a frame that included seven ties and ten lead changes. With 8:06 to play, Sean Doman (JR/Queens, NY) found Alonzo Mobley (SO/Lincolnton, NC) for a score that broke a tie and put the Cavaliers on top 77-75. While Allen would continue to push, they would get no closer than one point the rest of the way, as D.J. Caldwell (SO/Charlotte, NC) hit four free throws late to ice the win for Montreat.
Alonzo Mobley led all players with 21 points on 8-12 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. David Caldwell scored 17 points in 18 minutes of game action while Jeron Hemphill picked up his second consecutive double-double, collecting 15 points and 10 rebounds. David Everage (JR/Las Vegas, NV) scored 13 points and added six rebounds while Zach Davis scored ten points.
Montreat showed off their offensive efficiency, shooting 58% (34-59) from the floor, including 9-16 from the three-point line. The team dished out 17 assists while forcing Allen into 20 turnovers.
The Cavaliers will be back in action on Monday, January 16th when they travel to Crown College in their final non-conference matchup. Tipoff at McAlister Gymnasium is set for 6pm.
WEST POINT, GA - The Montreat College men's basketball team picked up an 84-60 win over Point University on Wednesday night in an Appalachian Athletic Conference showdown.
The Cavaliers (12-3, 6-3 AAC) used a David Everage (JR/Las Vegas, NV) bucket to cap a 13-2 run at the outset of the game. The Cavaliers kept their foot on the gas pedal and they used an Alonzo Mobley (SO/Lincolnton, NC) basket to take a 47-30 lead into halftime. Montreat kept the momentum going in the second half, growing the lead to 74-52 after Justin Storr (FR/Apoka, FL) connected on a three-pointer. The Cavaliers would go on to lead by as many as 27 points on their way to another conference victory.
D.J. Caldwell (SO/Charlotte, NC) led a balanced scoring effort for Montreat, scoring 15 points while adding five rebounds and three steals. Jeron Hemphill scored 14 points on 7-8 shooting while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. David Everage added 10 points and eight rebounds while Justin Storr led all players with 5 assists.
The Cavaliers saw 13 players get into the scoring column as they shot 44% (34-76) from the field while connecting on eight three-pointers. Montreat held a 52-39 rebounding advantage and limited the Skyhawks to 30% shooting while forcing 18 turnovers.
Montreat will be back in action on Saturday, January 14th when they host Allen University at 4pm in McAlister Gymnasium.
MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College men's basketball team got back to their winning ways on Monday night, topping Bob Jones University 95-83 in a non-conference game.
The Cavaliers (11-3, 5-3 AAC) had control for most of the first half, using a pair of Justin Storr (FR/Apoka, FL) free throws to take a 33-21 lead with 8:22 to play in the frame. The Bruins would begin to chip away at that lead in the latter part of the half and used a late 12-3 run to take a 47-44 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Jeron Hemphill capped a quick burst for Montreat that put them back out in from 50-49 just 90 seconds into the half. The two sides would battle over the next few minutes before a Spencer Norris (SO/Sylva, NC) three-pointer put the Cavaliers back in the lead 58-55. That basket ignited a 23-6 run by Montreat that pushed their lead to 78-61 with with 7:07 left to play. Montreat was able to keep the momentum going and their 51-point second half helped spur them on to the victory.
David Everage (JR/Las Vegas, NV) led the Cavaliers with 24 points on 8-9 shooting. In addition, Everage knocked down 8-9 free throws and pulled down four rebounds. Alonzo Mobley (SO/Lincolnton, NC) Scored 22 points on 8-10 shooting while Spencer Norris knocked down 3-4 three-point attempts as part of his 10 point output. For the game, the Cavaliers shot 53% (30-56) from the floor and 74% (29-39) from the free-throw line while the defense forced the Bruins into 23 turnovers. In all, twelve Montreat players found their way into the scoring column.
The team will be back in action on Wednesday, January 11th when they travel to take on Point University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup. Game time is set for 7:30pm.
