Charles Larry Wilson was born on April 28, 1934 in Tryon, North Carolina. He earned his BS degree at Springfield College in 1956 and accepted a teaching and coaching position at Skaneateles High School in New York. He earned his MS degree at the State University of New York at Cortland in 1961 and his PHD from Florid State University in 1971.
He moved to Montreat in 1965 and began his long and distinguished career in this mountain cove both with the College and the Mountain Retreat Association where he was director of recreation until 1977.
He was chairman of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department and Director of Athletics while coaching basketball, baseball, track, cross-country, soccer, tennis, and gymnastics. For two years, he was Director of Financial Aid (1977-1979). He served as the Dean of Students from 1973-1986 and then as the Vice President, Dean of the College from 1986-1993.
His long list of civic and charitable services include membership in the Montreat Presbyterian Church since 1965 where he has served as an Elder and Clerk of the Session; leadership with the Boy Scouts of America; East Buncombe county Chairman of the United Way; member of the Land-of-Sky Regional Council; Chairman, new Charles D. Owen High School Committee; member and past president, Black Mountain Rotary Club; and Commissioner, Town of Montreat.
Among his many accomplishments at Montreat College not cited above: he chaired the committees which built Newell Field and the Belk Center; expanded the physical education and wilderness programs and degrees; conducted the first chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and initiated the four-year athletic program and membership in the Tennessee-Virginia Athletic Conference, which is now known as the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Larry and his wife Judy, have four children and twelve grandchildren.
