As a Cavalier
Robert G. Watt was born in Thomasville, Georgia on February 17, 1922. He attended public schools in Thomasville and later Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He enrolled as a freshman in the Virginia Military Institute in 1940 where he was a member of the varsity basketball team.
He was called to active duty in the Army in 1943 with the United States entry into World War II. He served as an infantry officer in Europe and later in the Far East including eleven months occupation duty in Japan.
After three years in the Army, Mr. Watt returned to VMI and captained the golf team his senior year. He graduated in 1947 with a degree in civil engineering.
For nearly fifty years he has been a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Georgia serving as a deacon and elder.
He helped found the Atlanta and North Georgia chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 1962 and was instrumental in moving the FCA conferences to the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly. He started the first FCA charity golf tournament that is now replicated nationwide.
Mr. Watt joined the Montreat College Board of Trustees in 1988 where he has served as the Chairman of the Development Committee. Since then has been a champion on the Board for athletics and athletic facility construction. He has also served on the College Foundation Board. He has been instrumental in securing celebrity speakers for a number of athletic events and has been a supporter and advocate of the annual golf tournament since its inception.
