Justin Herbert begins his second year as an assistant cross
country and distance track coach at Montreat College after a spring track
season that saw four Cavalier distance athletes qualify for the NAIA National
Championships in Marion, Indiana. "I'm excited about this season," says Coach Herbert
"and I'm hoping we can build on the successes we had during track. Every
distance athlete on the team ran a PR last season and I'm hoping that momentum
carries through XC so we can take some athletes to Vancouver this November for
the NAIA National XC Championships." Herbert coached at Central Methodist
University in Fayette, MO last cross country season before joining the Cavalier
coaching staff in January.
Herbert, a 2008 graduate of Cedarville University in
Cedarville, OH, has a passion for working with Christ-focused athletes and is
striving to bring his passion and commitment to the Cavalier program. Herbert
is a USATF Level II certified coach in the distance events and will work with
Montreat athletes competing in XC and track events ranging from the 800 meters
to the marathon.
As an athlete, Herbert was a seven-time NAIA national
qualifier for the Cedarville Yellow Jackets and served as team captain during
his junior and senior seasons. In XC, Herbert capped off his career with a 55th
place finish at NAIA nationals in Kenosha, Wisconsin, finishing in a time of
25:39. On the track, Herbert excelled in the marathon. In 2007, he finished
10th at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the marathon,
finishing in 2 hours, 30 minutes, 52 seconds. Also in his time a Cedarville,
Herbert qualified for the 2007 USA 10-Mile Championships where he finished 40th
overall.
Herbert received his bachelor's degree from Cedarville in
education with an emphasis in history and math as well as a minor in Bible. Herbert has also recently completed his MA in
Educational Leadership and is looking forward to more success with the Cavalier
program.
