Coach Walters announces his most recent addition to the Cavaliers today. Ryan Bethoney, a 6'5" Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) All-State and All-Academic Selection, is coming to Montreat from Bloomingdale High School in Valrico Florida. Bethoney has been a starter at his local 8A high school for the past three years. "We are extremely excited about the addition of Ryan to the Cavaliers. He brings great versatility to the 4 and 5 spots for us. He is the type of player that can play with his back to the basket or step out and shoot the ball from behind the 3-point line," says Coach Walters. "Due to his high basketball IQ, he has the potential to step in and make an immediate impact in what we do." Ryan, a 2 year team captain, is only the 7th student-athlete in the history of Bloomingdale High School to reach the 1,000 point mark. As a senior he averaged 21.7 points while grabbing an average of 7 rebounds per game.
Bethoney excels off the court as well. He currently carries a 5.3 weighted GPA, and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the Spanish Honor Society. He also works as a summer camp counselor and a basketball referee at his local YMCA. He attends Westminster Presbyterian where he plugs in as a Vacation Bible School leader each year.
Joe Willis, Head Coach Bloomingdale High School Comments, "Bloomingdale High School is excited about Ryan's decision to attend Montreat College. Ryan is a terrific player and student who found a great place to match his strengths as a student and basketball player. Ryan was a great player and teammate at Bloomingdale and we look forward to seeing Coach Walters and the Montreat coaching staff develop those abilities even more in the coming years."
Walters added one last thing as he chuckled, "Ryan is an extremely well-rounded kid. The only negative thing I can think of is that he is a Duke fan, besides that, he fits the Montreat mold perfectly."
