MONTREAT, NC - The Montreat College women's basketball team got back to their wining ways on Wednesday, defeating Columbia College 75-66 in their final game of the season at McAlister Gymnasium.
The Cavaliers (10-14, 7-14 AAC) fell behind 23-18 after the first period and trailed by seven points at halftime. In the third period, Arianna Williams (SO/Lawrenceville, GA) capped a 9-2 run with a basket to give Montreat a 46-45 lead with 4:19 to play in the period. The two teams would tie up the score on four occasions in the frame before Katie Dillon (SO/Charlotte, NC) hit a basket to put the Cavaliers in front 52-50 as the third period ended. In the fourth period, consecutive field goals by Sienna Hicks (FR/Greenville, SC), Darah DeWalt (SO/Charlotte, NC), and Katie Dillon pushed the Montreat lead to 59-52 early in the frame. The Koalas would get the lead down to one point on two occasions but DeWalt hit four consecutive free throws in the closing seconds to cap an 11-3 run to give Montreat the victory.
Katie Dillon led the Cavaliers with 18 points while Darah DeWalt added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Arianna Williams collected 15 points with Sienna Hicks chipping in 11 points of her own. Montreat shot 46% (29-62) from the floor on the night and their defensive effort forced Columbia into 29 turnovers.
The team will wrap up their regular season when they travel to take on Tennessee-Wesleyan on Saturday, February 18th at 2pm.
